And now it's time to Instagram a ring selfie to let all of your friends (followers) know you're officially engaged, right? Not so fast! Before you start spreading the news over social media or freaking out over wedding-planning checklists, here are a few things you need to do first.
CUE the CONFETTI!
Before alerting the masses and sounding the alarm, take a moment with your newly minted fiancé! After spending a few moments in "AWE" now, let's share the news! Rule of thumb in most cases have been to share news of THIS magnitude with immediate family such as parents, siblings, and the cool aunts/uncles that are on social media (wouldn't want them to find out about the news from a post on social media would you?) best friends and of course your potential bridesmaids/groomsmen! After you've secured alerting your closest family and friends, go ahead and post that your ring selfie on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and every other social media platform that may exist. #ISaidYes
INSURE the BLING!
Make sure you talk to an insurance agent about coverage in case your ring or its stones ever need to be repaired or replaced. Getting an appraisal which in most cases is relatively easy, since most jewelers provide this service upon purchase. Be sure that you understand all the terms of the policy and find out whether you are covered if the ring is lost, stolen, or damaged. You may also be able to add a jewelry rider to your existing homeowner's or renter's policy; if not, inquire about how to set one up.
WHEN'S the BIG DAY?
Once the word is out, expect lots of questions, including "When are you getting married?" Reveal a date only if you have one, or let curious friends know plans are in the works—as they should be, especially if you want to hold your wedding at a popular time of year, such as June or over a holiday. Locations, photographers, caterers, and other professionals book up early, sometimes a year in advance.
